When Silence Is the Answer

I used to think I needed closure.
What I really needed… was clarity.
And sometimes, that clarity arrives as silence.

Not all endings come with an explanation. Some come with distance. With a missing response. With a quiet exit when you expected an honest word.

For a long time, I struggled to understand how people could choose silence where honesty was needed most. Where words would have offered peace, where clarity could have spared confusion.

But here’s the truth no one tells you:

Silence isn’t neutral. It’s a decision. A choice not to communicate. Not to clarify. Not to take responsibility. We often dress it up as “space,” “time,” or “letting things fade,” But what we’re really doing is avoiding discomfort. Avoiding truth. Avoiding accountability. And while it may feel easier in the moment, silence often leaves the other person carrying what was never theirs to hold: Doubt. Confusion. Shame. Self-questioning.

I’ve seen it in friendships, in workplaces, in families. I’ve felt it myself.

For those with deep attachment, it cuts deeper.

If you’re someone who’s deeply attuned to others…Someone who feels connection as a responsibility, not just a feeling…Someone whose nervous system is wired to care. Then silence doesn’t just hurt. It shatters.

It can feel like a betrayal.
Like abandonment.
Like something inhuman happened to your very human heart.

Because your sensitive soul wasn’t built for absence.
It was built for presence, for repair, for mutual understanding.

But eventually, painfully you learn: You can’t make people meet you in the space they’ve chosen to avoid. And the more you hurt, the more you realise just how much power you gave away to a silence that never deserved it. But what I’ve learned, and keep relearning is this:

You don’t need someone else’s words to move forward.
You don’t need their permission to let go.
You don’t need a perfect ending to close the chapter.

Closure isn’t something you’re given. It’s something you claim.

Sometimes, the absence is the answer. Sometimes, their silence is the loudest truth they’ll ever give you. And that’s enough. It doesn’t mean you’re unworthy. It doesn’t mean you were too much. Often, it means you were a mirror, reflecting something they weren’t ready to face in themselves.

But that’s not your burden to carry.

So now, I no longer chase closure.
I choose clarity.
I choose peace over pursuit.
I choose to stop mistaking silence for maturity or avoidance for emotional intelligence.

Because you deserve communication.
You deserve presence.
You deserve to be chosen clearly, fully, and out loud.

So if you’ve ever been ghosted, avoided, left waiting for words that never came…If you’re still holding your breath for closure that hasn’t arrived…

Let this be your reminder:

Their silence was the message.
You don’t need to wait anymore.

Your closure is not in their return, it’s in your release. It’s in the moment you choose clarity over confusion, peace over pursuit, and self-respect over silence.

You deserve to be chosen, clearly, fully, and out loud.
