– The Year I Learned to Listen…

Dear Karo,
This year may have felt still.
Not dramatic. Not loud.
No big trips, no sudden transformations, no life-altering milestones that look impressive from the outside. And yet – this year mattered.
This was a year of reflection.
Of quiet self-exploration.
Of sitting with yourself long enough to actually hear what was going on inside.
You learned that growth doesn’t always announce itself. Sometimes it happens in silence, in pauses, in moments where nothing seems to be changing, but everything is.
This year taught you emotional attachment and emotional maturity in a way words never could. You realized that words alone mean very little.
Actions matter.
Intentions matter.
Consistency matters.
You became more aware of how performative the world can be, how values are often spoken about more than lived. You learned about commitment, independence, and the fine line between connection and attachment. You learned that it’s okay to feel deeply. It’s okay to feel anger, too just don’t let it harden you. Let it move you forward. Let it sharpen your clarity, not steal your peace.
No matter what you do, people will always have something to say. Opinions are endless. Judgment is easy. Projection is everywhere. You don’t need to carry all of it. Ask yourself:
Does this serve me?
Does this teach me something?
Does this bring me closer to who I want to be?
If not, let it go. Energy is precious.
You realized that you only truly know someone when they allow themselves to be vulnerable. Everything else is a mask, often worn for survival. And that understanding softened you, even as it made you more discerning.
Thriving doesn’t mean constant ambition or external success. It means being content with yourself. Feeling at home in your own presence. Self-awareness is powerful. Confidence doesn’t need to be loud. Allow yourself a healthy ego, but don’t let it turn inward. Be kind, starting with yourself.
Your outer world is a reflection of your emotional one.
Even love showed up in unexpected teachers. Your dog reminded you what unconditional presence looks like. That the small things matter. That being there beats performing every time. You learned to guard your peace, to let the right people in, at the right time.
Boundaries aren’t walls, they’re doors you choose when to open and close.
You don’t need to be a CEO, a business owner, or an influencer with thousands watching to live a meaningful life. Wisdom comes from strangers, coworkers, quiet conversations, fleeting moments in the park. Every interaction holds something, if you’re paying attention.
Everyone talks about healing. Everyone wants to be healed. But few are willing to sit with their own pain long enough to understand it. Those who haven’t done their inner work may never fully understand you and that’s not your failure. Their inability to meet you where you are does not diminish your worth.
Expectations often lead to disappointment, especially when they’re unspoken. Clarity and transparency matter, particularly when goals are shared. Emotionally overloading others doesn’t bring closeness, it creates distance. Not everything needs to be carried together.
You learned how exhausting constant noise can be. Overthinking, stimulation, always being “on.” It drains the body and clouds the mind. So you learned to pause.
To breathe.
To return to yourself.
You saw how easily people will take if you allow it. How some will use emotional access for comfort and disappear once they’re soothed. You learned to observe rather than internalize. Their behaviour reflects their own unfinished battles, not your value. You are not a rescuer. Those who truly value you will show it through their actions. Everything else is just noise.
Your mental and physical well-being come first.
You became more attuned to your body, how it reacts when you’ve outgrown a place, a role, a dynamic. When things no longer align, the heaviness comes first. Listen to it. Don’t force yourself to stay where you don’t belong. It always shows in your energy, your posture, your presence.
You learned the power of writing things down. Of journaling the good and the bad. Of releasing thoughts instead of letting them circle endlessly. Gratitude, even when difficult, became an anchor. The simplest things often matter the most.
You saw how comparison slowly erodes joy. How even constant self-review can become a burden. Instead, you learned to count your blessings. To acknowledge progress. To celebrate yourself without guilt.
When in doubt, you don’t need everyone else’s opinion. Sit with yourself. Give it time. You already know the answer.
And finally, you learned to forgive yourself. For choices that made sense then, even if they don’t now. The past is done. The future is still yours to shape. And you learned about goodbyes. How difficult they are, even when they’re necessary. Not everyone is meant to stay. Some people are only meant to walk beside you briefly to mirror something back to you, to teach you a lesson, to awaken a feeling you hadn’t known yet. Their presence is temporary, but their impact lingers. They don’t always leave with closure, sometimes they fade quietly, disappearing into the fog. And that’s okay. Not every ending needs an explanation. Some chapters exist only to prepare you for the next one.
The love and attention you give yourself will always reflect back through your relationships. Connection matters. Community matters. But let people choose you naturally. Don’t chase. Don’t follow the crowd. Follow what feels true to you.
And maybe the most important thing you learned is this:
you don’t need to have everything figured out to be exactly where you’re meant to be.
This year didn’t ask you to become more impressive.
It asked you to become more honest.
More present.
More aligned with yourself.
You learned to listen to your body, your intuition, your boundaries, your needs. To trust the quiet knowing that doesn’t shout, but stays.
There is no rush.
No timeline to beat.
No version of you that needs proving.
Growth doesn’t always look like forward motion; sometimes it looks like grounding, releasing, and choosing differently.
So you move ahead gently.
With clarity.
With intention.
With trust in what you’re becoming, even when it’s still unfolding.
What didn’t change – it changed you.
Keep going.
