The Love You Want vs. The Love You Need

Not all love is meant to stay. Some is meant to awaken you. Some is meant to break you open. And some… is meant to finally hold you.

We don’t always recognise the difference between the love that excites us and the love that heals us until we’ve lived through both.

The love you want often speaks to your past. It echoes familiar patterns, the highs, the emotional chase, the longing to be chosen. It feels intense, magnetic, even addictive… but not always stable. It sparks desire… but doesn’t always build trust. It meets the craving, not the core.

We often mistake this kind of love for something whole and fulfilling thinking, this is what love is supposed to feel like. But what we’re really feeling is a reflection of unmet needs, unresolved wounds, or stories we’ve carried for far too long.

The love you need though that’s different. It speaks to your future. To the healed, evolving version of you. It feels calm. Grounded. Sometimes even unfamiliar. Because it’s not about control, intensity, or rescuing. It’s about consistency. Safety. Respect. It doesn’t chase. It shows up. It doesn’t try to fix you. It invites you to grow. The love you need may not flood your nervous system with adrenaline but it will gently teach it how to rest.

Too often, we live in a bubble believing that the love we want, the cinematic, passionate kind will make us feel whole. But here’s the truth: unless you’ve found those things within yourself – wholeness, peace, and self-acceptance – you may not be able to recognize or receive the kind of love that truly nurtures you.

The love you need gives you space.

It gives you comfort.

It encourages you.

It builds with you.

It teaches you new things about yourself as you grow together.

Eventually, you start to see the difference: The love you once chased may have mirrored your wounds…The love you now choose reflects your self-worth.

Wanting the kind of love that feels big and dramatic is human. But needing the kind of love that feels stable, kind, and emotionally generous that’s wisdom.

And yes when you’ve spent years surviving chaos, healthy love can feel… boring. But that “boredom”? That’s peace. That’s safety. That’s what healing feels like. Growth is knowing the difference. Healing is choosing the one that lasts not just the one that excites.

Because in the end, the love that truly transforms us isn’t the one that burns the brightest it’s the one that stays. The one that holds steady as we grow. The one that reminds us, again and again: You are safe here. You are seen. You are love. Not for who you perform to be, but for who you truly are.
